The rail grinding technology stems from 1950s-1960s, has become a world-wide important conventional rail repair and maintenance technology for high-speed heavy-load railway after years of development and innovation, and now is widely applied.

Steel rail grinding can be divided into repair grinding and preventive grinding. Repair grinding mainly includes that the grinding train grinds the rail to remove surface defects, surface cracks and peeling of the rail. Preventive grinding mainly includes that the grinding train removes surface hardening layer and micro cracks, and improves corrugation etc. Common injuries of the rail include scale injuries, scratch, corrugation and the like, usually originating from the surface hardening layer. Their development is non-linear and roughly includes three stages: micro crack spreading period, and early development is the nonlinear quick deteriorating period. When the grinding trolley conducts continuous mechanical grinding, large cutting output can be generated on the inner side of the stock rail at the tip end of the switch rail. When the rim analog measuring tool is utilized to perform inspection, the top point of the bevel angle of the measuring instrument at the position of Z-8 mm and the contact point of the rail will deviate towards the center of the rail head, there may be a 4 mm gap which cannot be inserted between the tip end of the switch rail and the measuring instrument, leading to overrun status of the tip end of the switch rail. As shown in the following figure:

 

 

To avoid the overrun status of the tip end of the switch rail, the small grinding device should be adopted to repair the inclined face of the tip end of the switch rail in the range of 60°/150mm during mechanical grinding operation. Do not affect the reduction value of the tip end of the switch rail during grinding.
